Because it is a natural material, each disc has its own thickness, opacity and faint growth grain. Look closely at a lit fixture and you will see some discs come up bright while others stay milky. Each strand hangs from its own ring, so the discs register air movement — a door opening, someone walking past, a window left ajar — and shift slightly, sometimes with a soft click.Most people find this is the point of a shell fixture rather than a drawback. That is an argument for hanging it above head height and away from doorways, not against the material.
