Chandelier Size Calculator
Chandelier Size Calculator
A chandelier that's too small looks lost. One that's too large overwhelms the space. Use this calculator to find the ideal size and hang height for any room or table.
📐 Method 1: Room Diameter Formula
This is the most widely used method for sizing a chandelier in a general living space, foyer, or bedroom.
Formula:
Room Length (ft) + Room Width (ft) = Ideal Chandelier Diameter (inches)
| Room Size | Ideal Chandelier Diameter |
|---|---|
| 10 × 10 ft | ~20 inches |
| 12 × 12 ft | ~24 inches |
| 14 × 14 ft | ~28 inches |
| 16 × 16 ft | ~32 inches |
| 20 × 20 ft | ~40 inches |
Example: A 12 ft × 15 ft room → 12 + 15 = 27 → choose a chandelier ~27 inches in diameter.
🍽️ Method 2: Over a Dining Table
The chandelier should be proportional to the table — not the room.
- Chandelier diameter = approximately ½ to ⅔ the table width
- For a 36-inch wide table: choose a 18–24 inch chandelier
- For a 42-inch wide table: choose a 21–28 inch chandelier
- For a 48-inch wide table: choose a 24–32 inch chandelier
- For a 60-inch wide table: choose a 30–40 inch chandelier, or 2–3 smaller pendants
- For a 72-inch wide table: choose a 36–48 inch chandelier, or 3 pendants in a row
Hang height over dining table: Bottom of chandelier should be 30–34 inches above the tabletop.
🏠 Method 3: Entryway / Foyer
In a foyer or two-story entryway, the chandelier needs to impress without being a hazard.
- Allow at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture
- For two-story foyers: the fixture can hang to the visual midpoint of the space — typically leaving 7–8 ft of floor clearance
- Diameter guideline: same Room Diameter Formula applies based on foyer dimensions
📏 Hang Height by Ceiling Height
| Ceiling Height | Chandelier Bottom From Floor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 7 ft minimum | Use a flush or semi-flush style |
| 9 ft | 7–7.5 ft | Standard chandelier with short chain |
| 10 ft | 7.5–8 ft | More visual room for a statement piece |
| 12 ft | 8–9 ft | Grand chandeliers with extended drop |
| 14+ ft | 9+ ft | Consider multi-tier or oversized fixtures |
💡 Tips for Getting It Right
- Use painter's tape: Mark the proposed diameter on the ceiling to visualize the size before ordering.
- Consider visual weight: An open-frame chandelier can be larger than a solid drum shade at the same diameter and still feel proportionate.
- Match the room's vertical scale: A chandelier with downward-hanging crystals or pendants adds visual height — great for rooms with high ceilings.
- Multiple smaller pendants: For long rectangular tables or open-plan kitchens, 2–3 pendants hung in a row often look better than one large chandelier.
