Pendant Light Spacing Over an Island or Counter

Getting pendant height right is only half the equation. The other half — spacing — is where most kitchen lighting goes wrong. Pendants that are too close crowd each other and create a cluttered look. Too far apart, and both ends of the island sit in shadow.

Here's the exact formula for every scenario.

The Core Spacing Principle

Pendants should be spaced so that light coverage overlaps slightly at the countertop level without the fixtures themselves overlapping or crowding visually at eye level. The goal is even illumination across the full island surface with balanced visual rhythm above it.

Two numbers govern pendant spacing:

  • Center-to-center distance: The gap between the center of one pendant and the center of the next
  • Edge clearance: The distance from the end of the island to the center of the nearest pendant

The Spacing Formula

Use this formula for any number of pendants:

Center-to-center spacing = (Island length − edge clearance × 2) ÷ (number of pendants − 1)

Standard edge clearance: 6–12 inches from each end of the island to the center of the nearest pendant. Use 6" for shorter islands; 12" for longer ones.

Example: 72" Island with 3 Pendants

(72" − 12" edge × 2) ÷ (3 − 1) = (72 − 24) ÷ 2 = 48 ÷ 2 = 24" center-to-center

Island Length Pendants Edge Clearance Center-to-Center
48" (4 ft) 2 6" 36"
60" (5 ft) 2 9" 42"
60" (5 ft) 3 6" 24"
72" (6 ft) 2 12" 48"
72" (6 ft) 3 9" 27"
84" (7 ft) 3 12" 30"
96" (8 ft) 3 12" 36"
96" (8 ft) 4 9" 26"

Minimum Center-to-Center Spacing Rules

Regardless of island length, never go below these minimums:

  • Small pendants (6–8" diameter): Minimum 18" center-to-center
  • Medium pendants (8–12" diameter): Minimum 24" center-to-center
  • Large pendants (12"+): Minimum 30" center-to-center

If your formula produces a spacing below the minimum for your pendant size, either reduce the number of pendants or choose a smaller fixture diameter.

Spacing for Specific Styles

Boho / Rattan Pendants

Rattan and wicker pendants are typically 12–20" in diameter. Their organic, open weave means light spills naturally in all directions — you can space them slightly further apart (30–36" center-to-center) without losing coverage. The visual texture does the heavy lifting.

Farmhouse / Industrial Pendants

Open cage and industrial-style pendants project light omnidirectionally. With a clear or Edison bulb, effective coverage radius is 18–24" at counter height — tighter spacing (20–24" center-to-center) creates a denser, more dramatic look that suits the style.

Counter vs Island: Is There a Difference?

The spacing formula is the same whether you're hanging over a kitchen island, a peninsula, or a breakfast bar. The key variable is always the length of the surface below, not whether it's technically an island or counter.

One exception: peninsula lighting. If the counter runs against a wall on one end, shift all pendants slightly toward the open end to ensure the working surface — not the wall side — is well lit. Apply the edge clearance rule only to the open end; reduce clearance to 3–6" at the wall end.

The Quick Spacing Checklist

  1. ✓ Edge clearance: 6–12" from island end to center of nearest pendant
  2. ✓ Center-to-center: use the formula for your island length and pendant count
  3. ✓ Minimum spacing: 18" for small, 24" for medium, 30" for large pendants
  4. ✓ If spacing falls below minimum: reduce pendant count or choose a smaller fixture
  5. ✓ Hang height: 30–36" above countertop (adjust for ceiling height)
