This Wren Hanging Alabaster Sconce features a hanging design. A braided cord loops through a brass hook on the backplate and drops the shade below it, so the weight goes down the wall rather than out from it. The whole fixture sits close to the plaster, and the difference in a narrow hallway is the difference between a light you can have and one you cannot.

  • Finish: Antique bronze
  • Bulb base: E26 bulb The standard medium screw base used in most household lamps.
  • Voltage: AC 110–240V
  • Control: Wall switch Dimmable with a dimmable bulb on a compatible dimmer.
  • Real Photo: The knot that holds it — brass hook and braided cord

Design & Materials

It also changes how it reads. A mounted sconce looks installed. A cord-hung one looks placed — closer to something you hung on a hook than something an electrician bolted on. The shade is alabaster, and stone this thin is translucent: light travels through the body of the material rather than escaping around its edges. The whole shade glows, veining and all, and there is no bright point anywhere on it to catch the eye as you walk past.

Alabaster is a natural stone, so every piece carries its own veining and subtle variation in color. The fixture you receive may therefore differ slightly from the images shown.

Good to Know

What makes this different from a normal wall sconce?

It hangs. Most sconces are a rigid arm holding a shade out into the room; here a braided cord loops through a hook and the shade drops below it.So the weight goes down the wall rather than out from it, and there is nothing rigid anywhere in the fixture. It also reads differently — placed rather than installed.

How do I know it's real stone and not resin?

Three checks the day it arrives. Weight — stone is noticeably heavier. Temperature — stone feels cool and stays cool; resin warms to your hand in seconds. Veining — real veining differs on every piece and runs through the material, so it looks different lit and unlit. Printed veining repeats and looks the same either way.

How far does it stick out from the wall?

[__]″ — and it is worth measuring your space against it. As a rule, anything under about 4″ is comfortable in a corridor; past that people start catching a shoulder on it.A cord-hung shade sits closer to the wall than a fixed arm of the same size, but the shade itself is 4.8″ across on the small and 6.5″ on the large, so check the number above against your hallway before ordering.

Small or large?

Both hold the same proportions — the large is the small scaled up about a third. Small (11.8″) is the one you hang more than one of: either side of a bed, spaced down a hallway. Large (16.3″) holds a wall on its own — a stair, an entry, beside a full-length mirror.

Does alabaster really glow?

Yes — that is the reason to choose it. The stone is translucent, so light travels through it and the whole shade lights up, veining included. It also throws a warm pool sideways onto the wall beside it, which is why one small fixture covers more wall than its size suggests.
